What Kind of Shots do Kids Need?
When children attend daycare centers, there may be plenty of viruses/illnesses that may be exposed to. This is why it’s important that kids have the proper shots taken before attending daycare centers. Shots, or vaccinations, can keep children from getting sick because of contagious diseases. According to Kidshealth.org, most children have most of their shots administered to them by age 2.
The Shots that Children Need
In an article by Consumer Reports, 12 vaccines are usually administered to children by the time they turn 6 years of age. These vaccines aid in the prevention of diseases. For example, there were only 55 reported cases of measles in 2006. Previously before the vaccination shot, the U.S. was experiencing cases that hovered around 500,000. Shots kids must take include:
• Chicken pox – introduced in 1995 and has rare side effects
• DTaP – introduced in 1992 and used to prevent Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis
• H influenza B – introduced in 1985 and helps prevent skin or bone infections, meningitis, and pneumonia
• Hepatitis A and B – These two shots helps prevent impaired liver function
• HPV – introduced in 2006 and helps prevent genital warts and cervical cancer
• Influenza – can be inhaled through a nasal spray and helps prevent pneumonia
• MMR – is administered to help prevent measles, mumps, and rubella
• Meningitis – used to prevent permanent neurological impairment and loss of limb
• Pneumococcal – introduced in 2000 and helps prevent pneumonia and systemic blood infection
• Polio – used to prevent respiratory failure, post-polio syndrome, and paralysis
• Rotavirus – introduced in 2006 and used to prevent fever, vomiting, and dehydration
