Is it just a clean record free of daycare neglect charges or is it something else? When you think about it, you as a parent are really entrusting a great deal of responsibility to your local daycare. It’s unheard for a nervous parent to let his child go wandering out by himself or running around in the middle of the street.

Yet, somehow the majority of parents are able to trust the daycare center, assuming that they have professional and experienced teachers and guidance counselors capable of keeping children safe and entertained. However, not every daycare center is a safe place. There have been numerous cases involving daycare abuse in recent years. Even back in the 1980s Researchers David Finkelhor & Linda Williams concluded that at least 5.5 children per 10,000 were sexually abused in a seemingly ordinary daycare center. How can you be sure that the daycare center you are using is free of daycare neglect or abuse?

We recommend that you carefully choose the daycare center and research the facility well in advance. Try and choose a facility closer to your home or work area. Personally visit with the staff members and the manager of the facility. Analyze the facility and use this as an opportunity to observe the children and the teachers or the volunteers. If you have doubts it might help to take your child to a daycare to visit and see how she reacts in the new center. Don’t forget to ask questions of the manager regarding child safety and policies in place to protect the class from daycare abuse. What makes a good daycare center? Defensive policies that have been set in place against the threat of daycare abuse and neglect would certainly be a positive. The best daycare you can choose should share all six of these characteristics:

  • The center maintains a good reputation
  • There are strict rules in place to protect the children
  • There is a stimulating curriculum for learning
  • The staff is qualified to work with children and genuinely caring
  • The facilities are clean and hygienic
  • The center is licensed and in good standing This is what every daycare center should be.

After all, they are keeping watch of our most valuable possessions—our children.
